“It’s clear that Coulson is writing what she knows, and a passionate, lively imagination pervades her prose, along with wit, exquisite detail, and poetic brevity.”

THE LOS ANGELES REVIEW OF BOOKS

“Coulson’s erudition is worn lightly, and any worry that the Met’s self-importance has rubbed off on her is quickly banished by the author’s sly wit.”

THE NEW CRITERION

Christine Coulson spent 25 years writing for The Metropolitan Museum of Art, departing as Senior Writer in 2019.

She started at The Met in 1991 as a summer intern in the European Paintings Department and returned in 1994 to start her first official job there after graduate school. During her tenure, she rose through the ranks, working in the Development Office, the Director’s Office, and the Department of European Sculpture and Decorative Arts.

In 2016, Coulson published a widely read essay in The New York Times about life behind-the-scenes at The Met. The Museum then gave her a yearlong sabbatical to write her bestselling novel Metropolitan Stories. Her acclaimed second novel, One Woman Show, was released in 2023 and is informed by her experience writing hundreds of wall labels for the Museum’s galleries.

Coulson still considers The Met home and is currently writing a new work of fiction inspired by objects in its collection.
